Enjoy creating your very own original tile at Tactile Studio in North London. Rachel will take you through her unique process of capturing flowers and foliage in plaster.
The seven hour course is an exciting introduction for beginners, as well as those with some previous art experience, to gain fundamental skills in casting with plaster.
Everyone will be making three tiles, each measuring 12 cms square.
What the workshop process involves
Choosing flowers and foliage, rolling out the clay, designing and arranging the flowers, greasing the frame, hammering it down, sealing the frame, mixing the plaster and pouring it in.
At this point we have a tea break while waiting for the plaster to set, and Rachel will give a tutorial on how to sand and finish your tiles at home.
Once the plaster is set the exciting moment arrives – pulling off the clay to reveal your tiles! Rachel will provide you with tools to sand and clean your tiles (it’s best to do this once tiles are completely dry after one or two days).
£200 per person, a maximum 6 people per workshop. This includes all flowers, materials and tools and small starter kit to take home.
Workshops are held based on Rachel’s availability. Please email for the next workshop dates.
“Thank you for one of the best afternoons I have spent this Summer. I was always told that I was not artistic at school and have spent the last few years discovering my creativity through my gardens. Your workshop was another step on that journey. You are a delight and pleasure to spend time with. Your passion and enthusiasm is totally infectious and the workshop was pefectly timed and planned to allow us to really learn this new skill and go home with real works of art.” Rachel
“Surrounded by tiles large and small that Rachel had made, she showed us the various processes involved and even allowed us to raid her garden to produce these unique and beautiful pieces of art. What I love about them is they capture a moment of time, like a photograph but in such exquisite detail. We didn’t need a vehicle to return home, we could have floated – it was such an inspirational afternoon.” Karoline
“Creating something unique is not always easy or much fun, but with Rachel’s skill and detailed guidance we were all able to produce tiles that were personal to us and a high standard. I was intrigued by the appearance of my tiles and how they captured the very essence of spring flowers in a timeless and elegant way.” Patricia
“I really enjoyed the workshop. It was interesting seeing how the tiles were made and even people who weren’t terribly artistic had fun arranging the flowers and rolling the clay. All the tiles looked great and now I want one of my friends to have another party and invite me!”
